AMARILLO, TX, Feb. 13, 2009 -- Compared to last week, chopped alfalfa and large bales weaker with chopped alfalfa as much as 5.00-10.00 lower. Sellers are finding price resistance as buyers continue to look and find alternative roughage sources. Feedlots and dairies are trying to cheapen-up rations as fed cattle and milk prices move lower.
Sellers continue to try to move inventories of old crop in order to make room for new crops.
Drought conditions in most areas have depleted hay stocks, especially large rounds of grass hays. Livestock producers in severe drought areas have been forced to go out of normal marketing areas or out of the state to find hay needs. Many feedlots and dairy farms continue to contract hay and corn silage for next year.

AMARILLO, TX, Feb. 6, 2009 -- Compared to last week, chopped alfalfa and large bale prices weakened as sellers found resistance from feedlots who are looking for cheaper roughage alternatives. Several lots are grinding anything including corn stalks to provide a roughage source at a cheaper price. Milo hay in particular is being ground and is providing excellent tests results.
Negative margins in the beef feeding sector along with losses in the dairy sector has reduced demand for some hay products. Sellers are trying to move inventories of old crop prior to the new crop, precipitating lower prices in some hay products. The exception seems to be high quality horse or dairy type hay that is almost always in short supply by the end of the winter.
Drought conditions in many areas have depleted hay stocks as supplemental feeding has occurred all winter even on wheat, oats, and rye pastures, keeping prices steady in those areas. The extreme drought condition in most all areas of the state is a major concern to hay producers as well as all other agriculture interests. Many counties have instituted fire bans as several acres have already been burned this year. The continuing extreme drought and stock tanks and ponds drying-up has some livestock producers moving or selling off livestock.
The decreasing milk and fed cattle prices has many dairy farms and feedlots cutting back on high quality hay requirements and forced to use other less costly roughage in order to lower ration costs.

Hay prices this week generally steady to lower.
AMARILLO, TX., Jan. 23, 2009 -- Compared to last week: Hay prices generally steady to weak in a slow to moderate trade. However, chopped alfalfa 5.00-10.00 per ton lower. High quality alfalfa for horses or dairy farms continues to be limited in supply.
Feedlots placements have been below normal and many suppliers have extended the contract period to accommodate feedlots. Some firmness noted due to the increased use by wheat and oat pasture operators as they use hay for supplemental feeding.
Decreasing dairy/milk prices has many dairy farms cutting back production and hay requirements. Several feedlots resorted to grinding corn stalks, Milo, and other rough hays particularly earlier in the season when hay prices looked like they were going higher.

Prices remain steady, but market is softening.
AMARILLO, TX, Jan 09, 2009 -- Compared to last week, alfalfa prices mostly steady, however some are predicting it to soften in the next couple of weeks, for many reasons.
First, for dairymen the declining price for milk cannot justify the increased cost of
hay. Feedlots do not have the numbers and have their supplies filled at present. Also, previously held supplies are coming into the market causing somewhat of a surplus. Movement and trade activity have been slow to moderate for Alfalfa.
Prices on Coastal remain steady, and supplies range from scarce to moderate. Movement in some areas have picked up since the first of the year, and more producers are reporting increased inquiry, especially from those areas who are in severe drought with limited grazing pasture. Most areas in Texas continue to be extremely dry with cold and warm fronts hitting and limited or no moisture. Areas in the North and Panhandle have either been losing or close to losing their wheat crops due to no moisture. Supplemental feeding continues.

Hay prices remain steady amidst predictions of a softer market in the new year.
AMARILLO, TX Jan 02, 2009 -- Compared to last week: Prices for hay holding mostly steady, although there have been comments made about the possibility of the market softening a bit after the first of the year. However, contracts for Chopped Alfalfa for spring months are still quoted at steady, if not a little stronger. Trade activity and movement slow for Alfalfa and moderate to active on Coastal Bermuda as those growing areas are still in a severe drought and have very limited grazing pastures available.
Due to the increase of supplemental feeding, some producers are running short on large rounds of Coastal and in other areas, some producers supplies on small squares of Coastal are dwindling. Buyers and sellers remain in a standoff over hay waiting to see that the New Year will bring.

What To Watch Out For To Avoid Hay Purchase Scams.
Back when hay used to be sold over a cup of coffee and a handshake, hard cash changed hands when the trailer was loaded. In the new era of email and money orders, things get a little more complicated.
In the last several years, con artists have developed some tricky schemes to separate a hay grower from his hard earned money, and in some cases, his hay as well.
The most common scams involve fraudulent checks or money orders. Some of the fakes are so good, banks have cashed them before discovering the fraud. The smart move here, though, is to hold any deliveries or pick ups until the funds have cleared the bank.
More complex schemes involve the scam artist sending money orders in amounts larger than the cost of the hay. The scammer then asks the grower to send money to a hauler who is an accomplice to the scam. The grower sends his check to the hauler, who, of course, never shows up.
The Hay Barn, is an internet classified ad site for hay, hay equipment, and haying services. It helps buyers and sellers across the globe arrange sales, and it has a page of details on current scams, and a listing of known scam artists.
The site lists several clues that you might be dealing with a scammer:
- Offering payment by cashier's check or money order only.
- Insisting on paying more than you're asking.
- Asking you to send cash on to a 3rd party, such as the hay shipper
- Poor spelling and odd word choices (not a native English speaker)
- Lack of knowledge or interest in the hay itself
- Unusual name, unusual e-mail address
- Refusing to speak by phone; insisting on corresponding by e-mail only
Treat any transactions that follow these patterns suspiciously, and insist on having money in hand before loading the trailer.
Growers who do fall victim to scammers should contact the Sheriff's Department immediately.

Late cutting fine stemmed products (clippings) have particularly jumped in recent weeks, with some deliveries quoted at over 300.00 per ton on a delivered basis. Users of high quality small square bales are being forced to turn to 3x3 bales in an attempt to find suitable products.
The contracting season for corn silage is quickly approaching and it will be
interesting to see how the declining input costs as well as commodity prices
affect the number of acres of corn silage and hay in the Panhandle and North
Texas. Another item that will no doubt have some effect in the upcoming year on
hay use and on the amount of acres of hay will be the declining milk prices and
the impending culling of cows.
Many areas around the state have endured dry conditions, forcing early
supplemental feeding, and depleting hay supplies. Winter grazing of wheat, oats
and rye pastures have been limited due to dry weather in many areas of the
state. North Texas wheat pastures are in desperate need of moisture, especially
those in the Western part of the region. There already have been reports of
cattle being pulled off of wheat pastures that had looked good early in the
fall. The much needed moisture at this point would not bring much relief until
February at the soonest in the North Texas wheat fields due to cold weather, but
would help Eastern and Central rye and oat pastures immediately.
